Umer Akram Chaudhary (of Counsel) Advocate High Court

Profile and Work Experience:

Umer Akram Chaudhry is an advocate of the High Court in Pakistan and attorney at law in New York. He has expertise in cross-border dispute resolution and a rich experience of practice before international forums in international litigations, arbitrations, and mediations. Umer started his career as a litigation lawyer at Raja Muhammad Akram & Co. in Lahore, Pakistan, where he was engaged in a wide array of disputes. He assisted Salman Akram Raja in landmark constitutional cases before the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Later, Umer moved to Singapore and worked with Clyde & Co LLP and Raja & Tann LLP, both internationally ranked amongst top-30 international arbitration practices. He was engaged in a breadth of cases arising from different common law and civil law jurisdictions in South and South East Asia and Middle East. He was primarily involved in joint venture, shareholders, energy infrastructure, and hotel management disputed. He also worked with a well-known arbitrator in Singapore and assisted him in a number of international arbitrations around the world

During the course of his practice, Umer has been engaged in and represented clients in a diverse range of disputes in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. His core practices areas are investment, commercial, construction and energy infrastructure disputes. He is well versed in the rule of major arbitral centers such as ICC, LCIA, SIAC, and HKIAC. He also has a solid experience in enforcement of arbitral awards in multiple jurisdictions under the New York Convention. Some examples of his international dispute resolution experience include the following:

  • Represented a Singapore company against a consortium of private equity firms in two arbitrations under the SIAC Rules in Singapore for an estimated claim and counter-claim of around US$600 million, involving
  • Construction of two major power projects in India, arising from shareholder’s agreements governed by Singapore Law.
  • Represented a US company and its subsidiary against an Indian company in an arbitration under the SIAC Rules in Singapore for an estimated claim of around US$15 million arising from agreement for sale and purchase of food processing equipment governed by Indian Law.
  • Represented a US company against a Myanmar company in an arbitration under the HKIAC Rules in Singapore arising from a 25-year term hotel management agreement governed by Myanmar Law.
  • Advised a Singapore company in a dispute against a Dubai-based international property developer in an arbitration under the LCIA Rules in London arising from leased agreement governed by UAE Law
  • Represented a Singapore company against a Dubai-based hospitality company in proceedings before the DFIC Courts in UAE for the enforcement of an arbitral award of approximately US$20 million.
  • Represented a Singaporean construction contractor against the employers in an arbitration for a claim of over US$20 million under the Singapore Institute of Architects Arbitration Rules in Singapore.
  • Represented a Singaporean company in the enforcement of an arbitral award issued in Singapore in Indonesia in coordination with Indonesian counsel.
  • Assisted the chairman of the Tribunal in a LCIA arbitration between various multinational energy exploration companies and a south Asian state.
  • Represented a Singapore company against a Dubai-based hospitality company in proceedings before the DFIC Courts in UAE for the enforcement of an arbitral award of approximately US$20 million.
